FIRST EVER CHCOCOLATE WALKERS REUNION

We offered our first Portland Chocolate Walking & Tasting Tour in October of 2007.  Since then, over 100 people have joined us for neighborhood searches for all things chocolate. We’ve heard the phrase “Chocolate Lovers Need to Stick Together” numerous times. So in order to keep in touch we’re having a reunion on Saturday, July 18th from 1-4 pm at one of our favorite spots in the Pearl District. Give us a tap at Savina@ChocolateTastingAndMore.com or call 503-334-8422 if you are interested in joining us and we can fill you in on the details.

SEATTLE LUXURY CHOCOLATE SALON

This event is happening on Sunday, July 12 from 10am-5 pm. Hosted by Taste TV, this same organization puts on similar events in SF, LA, Chicago and Las Vegas. There will be samples to savor from over 30 chocolatiers, confectioners, wineries, and other culinary artisans.  You can get more information at www.seattlechocolatesalon.com Why not make a day or weekend out of it? It’s a great excuse to visit our big city neighbor to the north.  If you do, let us know how you enjoyed the event.

CHOCO-QUOTE OF THE MONTH

“Since both its national products, snow and chocolate, melt, the cuckoo clock was invented solely in order to give tourists something solid to remember Switzerland by.”
~Alan Coren, BBC broadcaster, writer and humorist.

NEED SOME CHOCOLATE RELIEF?

If so, every Friday through September, Mars, Inc. is giving away a bar of your choice. One of the goals of this campaign is to emphasize the fact that Mars, Inc. includes no additional fats in their chocolate confection products.  Be on the look-out for an upcoming blog post on our website of what constitutes real chocolate. In the meantime, sign up for your free chocolate fix at https://secure.realchocolate.com

A MORSEL OF NW CHOCO- HISTORY

The Mars Empire had its modest beginning in 1911 in Frank and Ethyl’s family kitchen in Tacoma, Washington.  Today, this corporate giant produces 7 of the top 20 chocolate snacks in the world. Mars makes about 15 million Snicker bars a day, which is equivalent to the weight of roughly 4 adult blue whales. (How’s that for a comparison! Either way you look at it, that’s a lot of Snickers!) Mars is also very much at the forefront of chocolate research in regards to human health and cacao genetics.  For more history on this company, you might want to check out The Emperors of Chocolate: Inside the Secret World of Hershey and Mars by Joel Glenn Brenner.

A TASTING MACHINE?

The United Kingdom’s Malvern Instruments has created the Morphologi G3. This machine, by measuring particle size and intensity, can determine the quality of chocolate.  Although the company knows that they can never replace human taste buds, these machines may one day be used side by side human tasting panels. No news of a personal unit. That’s fine, since it would take the fun out of one of our favorite pastimes!

HAPPY BELATED FOURTH OF JULY

Thomas Jefferson, who died on July 4, 1826, was a confirmed hot chocolate lover. Bet he would have loved eating chocolate but he would have had to live another 21 years to experience it.  In honor of our third president, here is a recipe you might find handy this summer. Check out kit.jeffersonhospital.org for a savory way of getting more chocolate into your diet!
