CHOCO-PHRASE OF THE MONTH

October is Fair Trade Month. Show your support by purchasing certified fair trade chocolate. By doing so you insure that your product is made in a socially and environmentally sustainable manner, the cacao growers receive the highest price for their beans so they can provide more food for their families and give their children the opportunity to attend school. Need some ideas? Divine Chocolate, Equal Exchange and Theo Chocolate are all fair trade companies. Your purchases have the power to both tantalize your taste buds and make important global changes.

UPCOMING CHOCOWALKS

MORSEL OF CHOCO-HISTORY

What did Milton Hershey, John Cadbury and Joseph Fry have in common? They were of the Quaker faith and developed self-contained communities to house their workers near their chocolate factories. When England’s Cadbury needed to expand in 1879, they did so in a rural area that would become known as Bournville. It would also become the name of their dark chocolate bar. A few weeks ago Kraft, the new owners of Cadbury, announced that the Bournville factory will be turned into a global chocolate center concentrating on new product development and technology for chocolate manufacturing. Nice to know that chocolate will once again be the focus of this historic town.

MORPHING MEETUP

The Portland Chocolate Lovers’ Meetup was created to gather local chocophiles together and explore all forms of chocolate. Since May 2010, the group has grown to over 120 members and has had 14 enjoyably delicious Meetups at a wide variety of restaurants, wine shops, chocolate shops, and coffee houses and cafes. There is still much more to explore in the Portland Metro’s chocolate scene. Over the next few months this Meetup Group will be changing into Chocolate Tasting & More’s Facebook Page. Continue to keep up with the latest chocolate/food info, events, and special outings with fellow chocolate lovers- plus even more. Stay tuned for further details. Join us by clicking here to “Like” and thank you for helping us make a velvety smoooooth transition.

EURO CHOCO-HAPPENINGS

Now is the time to take a virtual trip across “The Pond.” London’s Chocolate Week, from October 10-16th, is an annual chocolate celebration featuring tastings and events from the UK's best chocolatiers. One can then travel 278 miles across the English Channel to Paris where the finals of the World Chocolate Masters competition will be taking place from Oct 17-20th. This year’s theme is “Cacao, the gift of Quetzalcoatl”. The U.S. finalist is Sylvain Bortolini, executive pastry chef at the Bellagio Hotel Las Vegas, and the U.S. jury representative is chocolatier Norman Love from Ft. Meyers, FL. If anyone actually attends any of these events, please divulge details galore.
